The City of Balkhash
The city of Balkhash is not a resort village but a full-fledged city with its own history: it developed in the 1930s around copper mining and remains an industrial center of the region. For tourists, it is a convenient base from which any shore of Lake Balkhash can be reached within 15–30 minutes. The city waterfront has been renovated, with a 2.5 km promenade featuring observation decks, sculptures and evening lighting. The city beach is currently closed while Bertys Bay is being cleared of bottom sediments. Swimming within the city is prohibited until the work is completed, so tourists use beaches outside the city. The city offers shops, pharmacies, cafés, a local history museum, the Metallurgists' Palace of Culture with two cinemas and a large public square, as well as hotels and short-term apartments. It is a convenient option for a longer stay if you want to explore a different lakeshore each day without changing accommodation.

The city beach is closed while Bertys Bay is being cleared of bottom sediments, so swimming within the city is prohibited. If swimming is your main goal, head to one of the nearby beaches outside the city, 15–20 minutes away.
