Unique Lake Balkhash

Balkhash is Kazakhstan's largest lake and one of the country's main summer destinations for domestic tourism. The Uzynaral Strait divides the lake into two parts: the western part is freshwater, while the eastern part is saline, with a distinctive turquoise hue. A holiday at Balkhash is not limited to a single location, as the lake has several different coastal areas. They differ in shoreline type, distance from the city, crowd levels, and infrastructure. Some offer sandy and busy beaches, while others have pebbly shores and a quieter atmosphere. The swimming season lasts from June to September, with water temperatures reaching +24…27 °C at the height of summer.

What to consider

Not all shores are sandy
Sandy shores are found in Torangalyk and Chubar-Tyubek. Other destinations have pebbles or rocks. Water shoes can solve this problem.
The city beach is closed
The beach in the city of Balkhash is currently closed for renovations. It is better to plan your holiday at the beaches outside the city.
Crowded during peak season
In July and August, especially on weekends, popular destinations can be crowded, both on beaches and in parking areas. For a quieter holiday, visit in June, September or on weekdays.
Places are booked in advance
Due to high demand, availability is limited during peak season. It is best to book 2–3 weeks in advance.
Mosquitoes near reed beds
Mosquitoes are active in the evening near reed-covered areas of the shore. Bringing insect repellent is recommended.
Queues at gas stations
During peak season, gas stations along the route can have queues. It is better to refuel in advance or carry a fuel canister.
